Ocean Pictures

The years of passion made this ocean pictures gallery possible. Every photo has a description of either conditions or my feelings about the photo. Feel free to share with your friends. If you enjoy the photos, please check the Photography Workshops on the Gold Coast with me.

The Ocean

The ocean is the greatest power on Earth, and it covers 71% of its surface. Also, it is a large part of the weather and climate patterns and it is also integral to all life forms. At this time the ocean is still mostly unexplored and unknown. Scientists had already discovered 230K species and who knows how many are yet to be found? Sometimes people use “ocean” and “sea” as synonyms, but they are not quite the same. Sea refers to saline water enclosed by the land. So, effectively, in Sydney, we have the Tasman Sea, not the ocean.

Ocean Photography

In regards to photography, the ocean is well-known to have fast and often dramatic weather changes. It can be sunny in one moment and stormy in just 15 minutes. The difficulty in comparison to other nature scenes is that there are more variables in the equation. When you go to do some regular landscape pictures, you check cloud coverage, temperature, and maybe wind. When you go out to do a beach sunrise, you also have to check swell and tide and also wind direction (you don’t want salty spray into your lens). The most important rule is never to turn your back to the ocean.

Locations

This gallery consists of ocean pictures, created mostly on the Sydney and Gold Coast beaches with a few in different areas. My favourite sites are Maroubra Beach, Tamarama Beach, Garie Beach, and Clovelly Beach. They all are different and suitable for certain types of ocean pictures. For instance, Garie Beach is perfect for the images with sand – it’s wide and flat and sandy. Mahon Rock Pool near Maroubra Beach has impressive cliffs and rock platforms and is great for that. Clovelly is great to catch huge waves, although it can turn dangerous, I don’t go there during very mighty storms.
