Beginners Photography Course

The beginner stage is quite broad. It ranges from ā€œwhere is the shutter buttonā€ to the basic composition techniques, filter usage and creative shutter speed effects. Iā€™ve designed a series of workshops to cover all needs within the Beginners Photography Course. Some will need just one, others may need more. Also, make sure to check out Gold Coast photography workshop homepage.

Who can participate

These workshops cover a lot of beginner areas so basically anyone who considers themselves a beginner in landscape photography can participate in the beginner photography course and get past their blocks or issues and step up to the next level. Weā€™ll figure out where are you at and what knowledge would benefit you most.

What weā€™ll learn

Obviously, it is impossible to cover all that within a single 2-2.5 hours workshop. Typically, people tell me what are the issues they are struggling to overcome or theory they find hard to comprehend and we go from there. So Iā€™ve decided to give a list of the most common topics to choose from. The list is not exhausting and if it doesnā€™t cover your needs, feel free to reach out and weā€™ll customise the workshop for you.

How It Works

Basically, you pick a workshop or a few, we pick a date and set off. All workshops are in-field, i.e. at the seaside or some other form of landscape, where we practice all of the material. Youā€™ll also get workshop notes to refer to later (if itā€™s one of the pre-set topics). For some of the of the topics, we can select sunset time to practice both short and long exposure in a quickly changing environment. For others we can choose daylight hours.

Private and Group Format

Both private and group workshops are possible. In the case of the group photography course, the level of the group must be approximately the same. For these workshops, the size is limited to 4 participants to ensure maximum attention to each student.

Summary ā€“ What You Get

  1. Private or small group workshop with 100% attention.
  2. Selected topic covered with examples.
  3. Various tasks to implement the knowledge you just got.
  4. Answers to all your photography questions within the nominated topics.
  5. Workshop notes if we have one of the pre-set topics.

Basic Principles of Composition and Light

Duration 2 hours
Location The rocky area with lots of features (eg Snapper Rocks)
Participants Private or up to 4
Time of day Daylight hours
Price $250 plus $60 for each additional student

Honestly saying, this one is my favourite. A composition is a way to build a photo in the most (or least) harmonious way. It allows us to make a decision, what to show and how to do it for the maximum impact. Some people are born with these skills, but 99.9% are not. Basic rules and principles are easy to follow and they help to get the head around the composition and start making conscious decisions.

The workshop is packed with the practical tips, examples and instant tasks. I believe the tasks part is the most helpful way to advance your knowledge.

We cannot speak of the photography composition without speaking about the light. It affects the photo and it affects landscape photography in general. In fact, itā€™s one of the most important parts of getting into photography. So, weā€™ll also talk about the light, its direction, quality and use cases.

Creative Effects in Landscape Photography

Duration 2 hours
Location The rocky area with lots of features (eg Snapper Rocks)
Participants Private or up to 4
Time of day Daylight hours
Price $250 plus $60 for each additional student
  1. PractisingĀ shutter speed and aperture for creative effects
  2. Various lenses use in landscape photography
  3. A wide-angle lens use techniques (best kept secret)

Ok, now you know how shutter speed, aperture and ISO work, but not sure what to make out of this knowledge. This special workshop is designed just for that. A lot of practice, a lot of examples so that these three things (aperture, shutter speed and ISO) make it to the core of your brain.

Another part of this workshop is various lenses usage for landscape photography. This one is very important. Most newbies think they just need one standard zoom lens and thatā€™s it. More advanced beginners reckon a wide angle is all they need. In fact, for the landscape photography, you need a range of lenses for various use scenarios.

In addition, a separate section of this workshops is about the wide-angle lens solely. Itā€™s not just to stuff more into the frame. A wide-angle lens is a powerful tool but it requires some extra knowledge to make the most out of it.

Final Word

Iā€™ve started doing workshops after casually teaching some of my mates. They all were super excited and told me it has been very helpful and fun. So I thought I could help others progress as well šŸ™‚ Hopefully, you find it useful. Please let me know if you have any questions or ideas about new workshops.

    Testimonials

    Yuri ā€“ July 2018
I have attended Antonā€™s Sunrise Master Class and I was surprised by great attitude, interesting information I got, and the excellent photos I took. Thanks Anton!

    Brinder ā€“ February 2018
Awesome! Anton was great ā€“ really friendly, knowledgeable, and flexible. He also gave good tips the day before ā€“ including a weather update. I am a beginner and Iā€™m very glad I signed up for the course. The location was what I was looking for & as the clouds shifted we were able to change location quickly to make the most of the sunrise, clouds, rocks, waves, water or more often a combination of them. I would highly recommend going if youā€™re looking to get into photography.

    Cindy ā€“ January 2018
Just finished this morning as I wanted to catch the first light of the new year. Anton is very knowledgeable about landscape photographing and also a very thoughtful person. He would tell you everything worth catching, the light, the sky, the rock, the waves, not only simply a sunrise. He has over 10 years experience of photographing and you could learn a lot from him like how to get a perfect composition, how to set the parameters for different view with the light changes, how to keep safe during photographing, etc. Iā€™ve learned a lot from him. Thanks and happy new year, Anton.
